CD Projekt RED are the developers for one of the biggest games of 2021, Cyberpunk 2077, and they recently got hit hard by hackers.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most popular games to hit shelves in 2021. Largely due to its success, developers CD Projekt RED, became a target for hackers.

CD Projekt RED had their entire Cyberpunk 2077 source code game files hacked, along with confidential company and personal information as well. The hackers tried to negotiate with the developers to settle on a large sum of money, but CD Projekt RED bravely declined. The investigation team behind the situation discovered that the hacked information was on auction on the dark web for around $7,000,000.

The game source code is considered the most valuable information to any game developer company, and having that information hacked and stolen is considered catastrophic.

Further investigations revealed that the likely culprit for the hack were hackers who by the name HelloKitty. It is still unclear whether or not the situation has been resolved.

Speculation around why hackers targeted Cyberpunk 2077 over other huge games is because of the disappointment around the game being pull off the Sony PlayStation consoles due to unresolved bug fixes. But, it's likely that the hackers simply found CD Projekt RED to be a relatively easy target.
