NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON EXPLAINS WHY THE SKY IS BLUE
Ever wondered why the sky is blue? Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains why.
Its a very common question, but not many people actually know why the sky is indeed blue. The biggest misconception is that the sky is blue because of the sea, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
Niel deGrasse Tyson gets asked why the sky is blue during an interview on StarTalk, hosted by Chuck Nice. Niel deGrasse Tyson goes on to explain that the Earth, first of all, has an atmosphere made up of many types of particles, from nitrogen to oxygen as well as dust and pollution. The sun emits pure white light, which penetrates the earth's atmosphere. However, the majority of particles in the earth's atmosphere are the same thickness as the blue wavelength of light which deflects the blue light in all directions across the atmosphere, thus making the sky appear blue in colour. Neil deGrasse Tyson also goes on to explain why the sun and sky appear to be different colours at different times of the day, or when the sun is closer to the earth's horizon as opposed to the middle of the day when the sun is overhead.
