THE IPHONE 8 CAMERA AI COULD GO WAY BEYOND FACE DETECTION

Apple might be working on a new AI camera system that would detect items in real time and automatically adjust the lighting to ensure better photos.

While digging through the firmware for Apple’s HomePod, developer Guilherme Rambo discovered a possible iPhone 8 feature called SmartCam. This code appears to show a host of preset scenes you might expect to see on a compact camera; like sport, sunny and sky, however, there are also scenes like fireworks and pets.

This seems to suggest that the iPhone 8's camera will be able to automatically adjust exposure within the photo. The company has long had a facial recognition feature that ensures subjects are in focus, but SmartCam appears to be well beyond that.

This feature was not announced at WWDC 2017 back in June. As such we’d expect it to be hardware specific, rather than a part of iOS 11 and it also appears – from the code that you can see in the gallery – that the iPhone 8 will arrive with an infrared face unlock feature.
