VIDEO: FINDING NORTH USING YOUR WATCH!
An important skill like this one that can be seen in the video below is definitely helpful to know. If you carry a functioning analogue wrist watch, then you can use it to find the North & South line.
Simply hold your watch flat and point the hour hand towards the Sun. Bisect the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark to get the North-South line. (North will be the direction furthest away from the Sun, for those who do not know).
Something that was not mentioned in the video was that at 12 o'clock the hour hand is on 12, so there’s no angle to bisect, well the Sun at 12 o'clock is /usually directly South, so the 12 o'clock mark itself is your North/South line. Although you could also just wait half an hour and you’ll have an angle to bisect.
NOTE: This method only works in the Northern Hemisphere. If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, then simply point the twelve o'clock mark towards the Sun. The midpoint between twelve o'clock and the hour hand will your North-South line. Check out the video to see how it works.
