VIDEO: HERE IS HOW YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN MINING RIG!

Mining is the term used to describe the process of extracting cryptocurrency tokens from a blockchain network. In the case of Ethereum, this involves having computers continuously run a hashing algorithm, which takes an arbitrarily large amount of information and condenses it to a string of letters and numbers of a fixed length.

Ether is kind of like Bitcoin, but rather than existing solely as a peer-to-peer payment system, it can also be used to fuel decentralized applications, or dapps, that run on the Ethereum network. Ether has garnered a lot of attention this year after its value rose to a peak of $400, an increase of 4000 percent since January.

If you’re new to the world of cryptocurrency mining, this guide should give even an absolute beginner all of the knowledge needed to put together an efficient Ethereum (or other GPU-minable altcoins) mining rig using readily-available consumer hardware.

In this how-to video, Motherboard contributor Daniel Oberhaus walks you through the step-by-step instructions for building an Ethereum mining rig from the ground up. By the end of the tutorial, you’ll be well on your way to mining Ether and contribute to the maintenance of the ethereal network with your own computing power.
